Prepositions: definition, types, and examples.

In this lesson, we are going to see what prepositions are, their types, definition, and some examples.

Definition:

prepositions are words that belong to “the 8 parts of speech” in English. It shows the relationship between a noun and other words within a sentence. A preposition always followed by a noun, and make a logical relationship within the sentence.

There are many prepositions in the English language divided into different forms and types.

Prepositions Types:

There are five main types of prepositions in English as we list below. Let’s learn more about them and give some examples to make things clear.

Simple preposition: simple prepositions are words like in, to, for, on, with, at, from… that often used to express place, time, location.

Examples:

the book is on the table

Books are in the box

They went to the market

I wrote the letter with a pen

She relaxes at home

Double preposition: double prepositions are two simple prepositions used together to often express directions.

Eg: into, upon, onto, within, without…

Examples:

Papers turned into a book

Upon legends, there was a big green dragon

The bird flew onto the roof

The grammar book is within other books

The warrior came without a sword

Compound preposition: compound prepositions are two or more words consist of a simple preposition and another word.

Eg: according to, because of, in place of, instead of, in addition to…

Examples:

According to legends, dragons were exist

Because of this issue, we will not continue with the same mistakes

After a hard day, In place of a nightmare, there was a nice dream.

Instead of a dictionary, I am using my phone

Participle preposition: participle prepositions are words ending with ing or ed. Ther are verb at origin functioning as prepositions.

Eg: during, following, including …

Examples:

During the night, wind could be scary

Following the rules can keep you away from troubles

All resources should be well organized, including the books

Phrasal preposition: phrasal preposition consists of a preposition, an object, and the object modifier.

Eg: on the dirty ground, in the big box, after the heavy stone…

Examples:

Neighbors children play on the dirty ground

The grammar book is in the big box

The kitten hide after the heavy stone

Types of prepositions: Functions within a sentence:

Preposition of time: show a relationship between a noun and another word, referring to time within the sentence.

eg: before, after, On, at, in, from, until, since, by…

Examples:

They are supposed to finish before 6 PM

The game will be after tomorrow

The theater will open on 31 December

She is in the university since 2018

Preposition of place: show a relationship between a noun and another word, referring to place within the sentence.

Eg: over, under, On, at, in …

Examples:

The grammar book is on the table

The kitten was under the shelf

The party was at home

All books are in the box

Preposition of direction: show a relationship between a noun and another word, referring to directions within the sentence.

Eg: between, through, behind, over, …

Examples:

The car goes between mountains

It went through the tunnel

It passes behind houses

The car goes over the bridge

Preposition of agent: show a relationship between a noun and another word, referring to an agent within the sentence.

Eg: for, by, with …

Examples:

The gift was for my wife

Sheets were by our teacher

The boy went with his uncle

Preposition of thing (device, tool, machine…): show a relationship between a noun and another word, referring to things within the sentence.

Eg: for, by, with …

Examples:

The upgrade was for my car

The trip was by my bike

The computer works with batteries
